HRT

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Since the early 90s HRT has had a very bad rep, the outcome of mis-perceived research at the time led to research being halted and frightening links to breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and clots being continuously mis-reported, which in turn led to both patients and doctors concerns and confusion resulting in everyone coming off HRT and GPs no longer recommending it!  Immediately and suddenly with no alternative..

Further exploration declared the risks reported had in fact been over estimated and evidence shows the benefits are outweighing the risks for most women, taking HRT from their peri-menopause stage.

Since the creation of bio-identical HRT, plant based options used through the skin, the risks associated with HRT have been reported as low, and the steady rise in women seeking support in this format is a very positive sea change for the current generation of women coming through their peri-to-post transition years.

HRT is not for everyone and despite its popularity, each women’s case needs to be considered with the support of a menopause consultant or a GP who is well versed in the menopause – a reminder not all are!

The peri-menopause transition brings with it many uncomfortable symptoms, from sleep deprivation to hot flashes, weight gain to sore joints and everything in between and it can last from 5-10 years, before it moves into full menopause when hormone depletion is at its highest and for many women symptoms can last decades.

Menopausal women have an increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression and dementia.  The low hormone levels and health risks associated with menopause last for ever.

HRT is not a temporary treatment given for just a few years to improve menopause symptoms.  Many women are incorrectly told to stop it at a certain age or after a certain length of time.  Body Identical HRT is very safe to use and can usually be taken for the rest of your life.  HRT does not delay menopause, it simply helps relieve the symptoms

All women taking HRT should have an annual review and assuming everything is going good, there is no reason to stop HRT.  Women who take HRT have a lower risk of developing the above named diseases too.

As with all women’s health matters, the key is to become informed – information is power and women feel very disempowered during the peri-to-post menopause transition.  Start with education on the key areas that affect your health, your hormones are number one!
