Turmeric
Turmeric is a phytoestrogen, a plant source of oestrogen, so it can help women going through the menopause, by balancing oestrogen. It is a natural antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
Turmeric has been found to help with gut inflammation and protects the gut from bacterial infections, often associated with hormonal imbalances during peri-to-post menopause. It also helps the liver to work more optimally, supporting it’s detoxing function. Turmeric helps lower cholesterol and helps excess fluid removal from the body.
Curcumin found in turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound, regulating inflammation and relieving joints from pain and stiffness often experiences by women during menopause. Curcumin can help to balance serotonin and dopamine and research has shown it helps to relieve brain fog symptoms. It is shown to potentially reduce depression.
Research has also shown that curcumin has anti-cancer properties and is able to kill some cancers and prevent more from growing, in particular breast, bowel, stomach and skin cancers.
The best sources of turmeric and through supplements as we do not consume enough in a standard healthy diet to reap the benefits.
Caution - if you’re taking blood-thinning medications, consult with your GP before taking a curcumin supplement, as it can act as an anti-coagulant.
